Shear-thinning and shear-thickening emulsions in shear flows

چکیده

We study the rheology of a two-fluid emulsion in semiconcentrated conditions; solute is Newtonian while solvent an inelastic power-law fluid. The problem at hand tackled by means direct numerical simulations using volume fluid method. analysis performed for different fractions and viscosity ratios under assumption negligible inertia zero buoyancy force. Several carrier fluids are considered encompassing both shear-thinning thickening behaviors. show that effective system increases shear-thickening decreases ones all considered. changes mainly due to modifications coalescence obtained changing property: indeed, local large low shear rates found regions between two interacting droplets thinning fluids, respectively, resulting increased reduced which ultimately affects drainage time system. This process independent nominal ratio we it can not be understood considering only mean rate across domain, but full spectrum must taken into account.

stability of shear-thickening and shear-thinning fluids in narrow gap between rotating cylinders

the effect of weak shear thickening and shear thinning on the stability of the taylor-couette flow is explored for a carreau-bird fluid in the narrow-gap limit. the galerkin projection method is used to derive a low-order dynamical system from the conservation of mass and momentum equations. in comparison with the newtonian system, the present equations include additional nonlinear coupling in ...

Optimal Control of Shear-Thickening Flows

We study optimal control problems of systems describing the flow of incompressible shear-thickening fluids. We prove existence of solutions and derive necessary optimality conditions under precise restrictions on the optimal control.

Origins of Shear Thinning to Shear Thickening Transition in Cement Pastes

Introduction Cement is the most abundantly used man made material on the planet, accounting for a 40 Billion USD market in the US alone [1]. Widespread use of cement includes applications in oil well casings, roadways, buildings, and even as a bone graft technology for the treatment of osteoporosis[2,3]. As cements role as the foundation of our infrastructure broadens, demand for higher strengt...

Schematic Mode Coupling Theories for Shear Thinning, Shear Thickening, and Jamming

Mode coupling theory (MCT) appears to explain several, though not all, aspects of the glass transition in colloids (particularly when short-range attractions are present). Developments of MCT, from rational foundations in statistical mechanics, account qualitatively for nonlinear flow behaviour such as the yield stress of a hard-sphere colloidal glass. Such theories so far only predict shear th...

Shear viscosity and shear thinning in two-dimensional Yukawa liquids.

A two-dimensional Yukawa liquid is studied using two different nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation methods. Shear viscosity values in the limit of small shear rates are reported for a wide range of Coulomb coupling parameter and screening lengths. At high shear rates it is demonstrated that this liquid exhibits shear thinning; i.e., the viscosity eta diminishes with increasing shear ra...
